Swimming Pool Planning During the Winter

Home improvement

Unless you have a heated pool, your pool will remain unused during the cold winter months. However, whether you have an above-ground or in-ground pool, maintenance is essential even during these months.

This ensures your pool remains in good condition and reduces the time and money needed to repair and re-open it during the hot spring and summer months. Here are a few essential things you should do to your pool over winter.

Conduct a Professional Inspection

Before closing your pool, have a professional inspect and assess it. This helps you identify any issues and damages that might have occurred as people used it in the hot months. Repairing these issues, even minor ones enables you to avoid more significant issues as time passes.

If you wait to repair them, it gives you a clear picture of the issues you must fix before re-opening the pool. This makes it easier to budget and prioritize the problems, avoiding last-minute surprises.

Clean The Pool Regularly

Brush the floor and walls of your pool and vacuum it at least twice a week. This helps keep algae from growing and scum from accumulating, maintaining the pool’s radiant and bright colors.

You should also clean the pump’s lint basket, skimmer baskets, and filters to remove any leaves, grease, and oil deposits. This ensures the filtration system remains effective and reduces the time and effort to clean them when re-opening the pool.
You can also use shock treatment to eliminate chloramines like bird droppings, suncream, sweat, ad dead bugs.

Keep The Pool Covered

Invest in a high-quality pool cover to reduce the time and effort you use to clean your pool. This keeps your pool away from leaves, ice, snow, bugs, and other debris. It also helps reduce chemical evaporation, saving you money and time in the long run.

Keep The Water Balanced

To prevent algae and bacteria growth, you should ensure your pool’s pH levels remain between 7.2 and 7.6. You should also check the chlorine levels and ensure they remain between two and three parts per million (PPM) throughout the winter months.

If you have a pool blanket or salt chlorinator, reduce the chlorinator output to around one to two PPM. This is because the pool blanket traps chlorine and chemicals and can result in high chlorine levels, damaging the pool surface and equipment.

Have a Maintenance Schedule

Having a professional inspect your pool at least once a month is essential. This includes a visual inspection to ensure the equipment remains in good condition, checking the pH and chlorine levels, and inspecting the water levels.
