Is there a time when someone is infectious?

It is not known whether viral shedding occurs at the same time as when it happens. The duration of infection for COVID-19 is also unknown. Based on current evidence, scientists believe that persons with mild to moderate COVID-19 may shed replication-competent SARS-CoV-2 for up to 10 days following symptom onset, while a small fraction of persons with severe COVID-19, including immunocompromised persons, may shed replication-competent virus for up to 20 days. SARS-2 RNA could be detected in the upper and lower respiratory tracts for several weeks after illness onset. This is similar to SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV infections. However, the presence of viral RNA does NOT necessarily indicate that an infectious virus is present. According to existing literature, the time it takes for SARS-CoV-2 or other coronaviruses, such as MERS-CoV and SARS, to develop symptoms (or incubation) is between 2-14 days.

What body fluids are susceptible to infection?

SARS-CoV-2RNA was detected in lower and upper respiratory tract specimens. SARS-2 virus was isolated from upper respiratory tract specimens as well as bronchoalveolar fluid. SARS-CoV-2RNA was detected in stool and blood specimens. SARS-2 virus was isolated from stool samples of patients. One patient suffering from pneumonia was also identified in cell culture. It is unknown how long it takes for SARS-CoV-2 to be detected in the upper and lower respiratory tracts, and extrapulmonary specimens. MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV infections can last for several weeks. Although infectious SARS-CoV can be isolated from blood, urine, stool, and respiratory specimens, it is not viable. Viable, infectious MERS CoV was only isolated from the respiratory tract specimens. It is unknown if other fluids, including blood, vomit and urine from infected people, can contain viable, infectious SARS-2.

Is it possible to re-infect people who have recovered from COVID-19 with SARS-CoV-2

Recent reports by the CDC indicate that people who have been previously diagnosed with COVID-19 may be re-infected. These reports are understandable to cause concern. It is still not clear what the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 virus infection looks like, and how long it lasts. Some reinfections can be expected based on what we know about other viruses, such as common human coronaviruses. COVID-19 research continues to determine the severity and frequency of reinfections and who is at greater risk. No matter if you have COVID-19, it is important to use a mask when in public, keep your hands clean and dry, avoid crowds, and wash your hands frequently with soapy water for at least 20 seconds.
